President's Message

As a local Bristol doctor, I frequently see the challenges faced by older people struggling to cope with hardship and distress whilst trying to maintain their independence at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic has had major adverse health consequences globally and locally.

Therefore, to be granted the Presidency of the Dolphin Society (2021-2022) is both a rare privilege as well as a tremendous opportunity to lead the ongoing achievements of our Society in supporting and assisting elderly or disabled people in the Bristol, South Gloucestershire & North Somerset localities.

Building on my background experience as a frontline practising medic across the BS postcodes over the past 30 years I hope that we will be able to add newly funded initiatives to our current projects which include the following:

  • Set up of a Housing Options project giving people living in inappropriate housing the practical help and advice needed for them to move to housing better suited to their circumstances and health needs
  • Funding the launch of the Making Space scheme involving peer support which directly addresses the often-unrecognised condition of hoarding that adversely affects the quality of life of many older people, enabling them to live safer, happier lives
  • The replacement of analogue telecare with digitised units for our existing 350 clients for whom we provided pendant alarms prior to the recent needs-based Bristol City Council telecare service
  • Through my health connections locally we are in the process of funding the distribution of practical equipment to enable older people living in our local community to stay healthy and detect disease – the ‘Dolphin Vital-IT Kitbag’, containing a blood pressure measurement machine, thermometer, oxygen saturation monitor, height/weight chart & flash glucose monitor is to be piloted locally in order to help older people stay healthy and detect treatable diseases

I hope that as part of our forthcoming 2022 appeal you will consider and be generous in giving funds to support our local work to maintain and develop a range of activities that are evaluated for funding in terms of enabling older people in need to live safely and securely in their own homes.

Thank you

Joyshri Sarangi
