President's Message

Hello and welcome to our website.

I am honoured to have been asked to be President of the Dolphin Society – and look forward to the coming year of involvement, visits, fundraising, donating to worthy causes and raising awareness of the problems faced by older people in and around Bristol, the City in which I was born and bred.

Involvement with local charity is in my DNA - we grew up with a mother whose activities over and above looking after the family and hosting dinners for my father, his suppliers and customers, was charity work.

This included being on committees for various Bristol older people’s charities and being a 'visitor', for them. All this along with being a carer for children with learning difficulties in order to give respite to their families. She also managed to care for and eventually re-home ten immediate family members and friends. Throughout this time we would go around with her, chatting and playing with those being visited, we would sometimes play music, or sing to them. It was always joyous and rewarding for both parties and taught me much about the benefits of volunteering.

Inspired by Mum's activities, while at school, I also did some befriending for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  I became acutely aware of how much these visits helped the older person being visited– it was so much more than having a cup of tea made or shopping being done. The importance of human contact and seeing the vital aids, installations and minor changes in a house that increase the quality of life for the person, which also allow them to stay in their own home for as long as possible has stuck with me. This is why I am so honoured to be able to play my part in helping the Dolphin Society continue to support the most vulnerable in our area to live safely and independently at home.

If you know me, don't be surprised if you receive a letter from me at Appeal time.....and if you don't know me, feel free to donate at any time!

Thank you for taking the time to find out about us,

Mimi Avery
